Cardinals Open Season At Heartland Relays
The Mineral Area Cardinals Cross Country teams competed in their first meet of the 2023 season on Friday, August 25th at the Heartland Juco Relays in Normal, Illinois. Race performances were affected by the hot weather, which was still around 89 degrees with a heat index of 95 at the 6:00 p.m. start time. The race format helped offset the conditions, since each runner only ran 1 mile at a time, with all of the seven competing schools running as many two- person relay teams as they had people for. Each of the women's relay teams ran 3 X 1-mile per runner for a total of six miles, while the men ran 4 X 1-mile for an 8-mile total time. Top 10 finishing two-person teams for each gender won t-shirts, with the competing schools producing 20 total 2-person teams for the women and 30 teams for the men. The Running Cards had 2 award winning teams, with Bradley Ahrens and Nick Daugherty finishing in 5th place with a time of 42:03 for 8 miles on the men's side, while Abigail Dean and Riley Petsch placed 7th for the Lady Cards in a time of 40:24 for 6 miles.
